Give your shed a new lease of life this summer with a fresh lick of paint and perhaps even a cute little squirrel bench!

If your shed is looking a little sorry for itself, then don’t worry, it’s nothing a fresh lick of paint can’t sort out. It is really amazing how a little TLC can totally transform the look of your shed and, in turn, transform your entire outdoor space.

Whether you’re going for a total shed revamp or a simple maintenance wood treatment, your shed will look so much better for some extra attention, and you’ll be more inclined to use it as something other than a place to chuck the extra compost.

Things You’ll Need:

Creocote: A really great way to protect your shed from the elements.

Good Quality Paint Brush: High-quality paintbrushes make all the difference, especially on tired woodwork.

Groundsheets: Even though you’re outdoors, nobody likes extra mess.

Paint Tray: To contain your paint as you work.

Sandpaper: To prepare your shed for its new look.

Screwdriver or Drill: For any repairs or upgrades.

Exterior Screws, Nails or Brackets: You might want to replace any tired hardware or you might discover a few repairs you need to make.

Wood Filler: To patch up any holes.

     Squirrel Bench: Optional but adorable!

Step 1: Check For Any Repairs

It’s no good going ahead and painting your shed if it needs a lot of repairs still. Give your shed a once-over before you start and address any problems you find. We’ve got plenty of hinges, latches, screws, and brackets available should you need to replace any.

Of course, you might also choose to replace any aging hardware as a part of your makeover. We suggest you do that once the paint job is complete, though!

Step 2: Prepare the Surface

Rid your shed of any cobwebs, insect nests, mud, or flaky old paint to prepare it for its new paint job. You should also sand any rough patches or places where the wood has splintered to help the new treatment soak into the wood properly. You can also take this time to fill in any holes as well.

Step 3: Choose Your Paint

Honestly, Creocote is a great choice here as it’s got a great deep-penetrating formula without any of the harmful aspects, so if you’re trying to be kind to the environment, Creocote is your product! We’ve got a light and dark brown shade, so you do have choice here as well although if you want something brighter, paint might be your best option. Just be sure to choose one designed for the great outdoors.

Step 4: Apply Your Paint

When you’re applying your coating of choice, be sure you go for a big shed brush with decent bristles. It’ll take you less time and you’ll get a nice even coverage, which will make your shed look very smart. Work from the top to the bottom so you catch any drips and work in the same direction as the grain of the wood so the product soaks in.

You can be surprisingly generous with wood coatings as sheds soak up an incredible amount of product, so apply liberally and don’t be afraid to add a second coat if it needs it!

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Now you’ve got the difficult bit out of the way, it’s time for the fun bits! Add new hardware, useful hooks for hanging baskets, or even outdoor string lights to create a fun ambience at night. You might even add a squirrel bench, which is just the cutest way to invite wildlife into your garden. Bird feeders and bee hotels are also a welcome addition!
