A stone wall creates a clean border along your lawn and it's a great way to add depth and texture to a flat garden. It's practical for growing plants and herbs, too.

Here are the tools you'll need:

Wheelbarrow
Spade
Utility Knife

Here are the materials:

Border Material
Landscape Fabric
Top Soil
Gravel
Sand

And here's how to do it:

1. Choose the stones or brick that you'd like to make your wall out of. For lawn edging, limit the height of your wall to two courses to remove the risk of stones falling out.

2. Dig a trench. Mark the path of the border with paint, then dig a 4-inch deep trench along the line. Make the width the same as the stone width plus 6 inches.

3. Fill the trench with gravel. Pack in and level a bed of gravel. Keep the height at or below soil level. If necessary on slopes, plan to step the stone up or down.

4. Set the first row of stone or brick. Lay the first row of stones about 4 inches from the grass edge. Push in more gravel or dig it out to align and level the stones/bricks. Remember to wear goggles if you're chipping the stones.

5. Lay the second row of stone/brick. Stack the second row of stones onto the first, overlapping the joints. Test several stones to find the most stable fit.

6. Lay a strip of landscape fabric against the back of the stones and fill the planting bed with topsoil. Trim off excess fabric once the bed is filled.

7. Pack mulch into the gap between the new stone/brick wall and the border of the lawn. In this example, the trench was lined with plastic edging. The edging keeps grass roots from creeping into the stone wall and the mulch provides a mowing track for lawn mower wheels.
