You may or may not have heard of the popular trend called colour drenching but what exactly is it? Colour drenching is the bold design statement where you choose one colour and go to town on your whole room.
We’re talking walls, ceilings, woodwork, furniture, and anything else you can think of in one, solid statement colour. If you’re up for a new DIY challenge that really packs a punch then we’ve got everything you need to know right here.
Tools you'll need:
The right tools for the job will make this project a whole lot easier for you. Investing in a decent set of paint brushes and rollers is the absolute key to making this project a colourful dream instead of your worst decorating nightmare.
Paint Brushes: Woodwork, cutting in, and those places a roller cannot reach are where your brushes come in handy.
Paint Rollers: Maximum coverage, minimum effort.
Paint Trays & Liners: The easiest way to apply paint to your roller, and for a simple clean up.
Extending Poles: Save your back and avoid climbing ladders when you paint the ceiling.
Decorators Ladder Bar: When you have to use a ladder, make life easier by bringing the tools and paint with you.
Masking Tape: For clean lines around windows and light fittings.
Sandpaper: In case you need to prep any wonky walls.
Step 1: Choose Your Colour
It feels a little daunting looking through paint chips because we have so much choice these days but at the end of the day, it’s just paint. If you change your mind, simply paint over it.
A handy way to help you choose is to grab samples of all the colours you love and paint a little square of each colour in the room. You can watch how the colour changes depending on the lighting or even the time of day which definitely helps you visualise the final project.
Step 2: Prepare the Room
Walls with lumps, bumps, and imperfections will look bad no matter what colour you choose. Take a little extra time to sandpaper over the unsightly spots on your walls and you’ll definitely be thanking yourself later. Don’t forget to sand the woodwork.
Step 3: Start from the Top
Cover surfaces and belongings with your groundsheets and grab your extending pole as we’re going to be starting with the ceilings.
You should also tape around fixtures and fittings to avoid you forgetting about them later on. Decadent a little paint into your smaller bucket and cut in around the edges of your ceiling. Next, pour your chosen paint into a tray, generously coat your roller, and work in long, even rolls to cover your ceiling. Repeat for as many coats as you need.
Step 4: Move onto the Walls
Once your ceiling is fully drenching in colour it’s time to work your way down to the walls. This is very similar to the ceiling in that you begin by cutting in around your edges and anywhere else your roller won’t reach.
Then you can repeat the steps for the ceiling by using your roller to completely cover every inch of your walls in your chosen colour.
Step 5: Woodwork Time
Once all of your walls and your ceiling are completely dry, it’s time to move to your woodwork. You need to use a brush for this step so you can easily navigate any fiddly bits and you might choose to use a satin or gloss finish. However, that is entirely up to you.
Step 6: Finishing Touches
When everything in the room is totally dry you can assess for any areas that need touch ups. Don’t be afraid of adding an extra coat if it means avoiding unsightly brush or roller marks.
Of course, then you can decide which items of furniture you would like to paint too.
