Once a simple but plain looking shoe cabinet, Hunker have reconstructed the MACKAPÄR IKEA cabinet into an interesting, textured piece. They’ve done it using half-round dowels which they’ve cut to a geometric pattern.

All that’s needed for this, apart from the cabinet and dowels is a hand saw and miter box, light sandpaper, and wood glue.

Again you could add unique handles to yours, and think about how the storage inside works for you – hooks can be great to utilise otherwise dead space.

This is a simple enough hack for your furry friends. Instead of a cumbersome cat tree, try these floating shelves with a comfy topper from House Beautiful. They use IKEA Lack Wall Shelves which comes with hidden suspension brackets.

These shelves have a clear acrylic lacquer finish so they’ll initially be a little slippery for paws. We recommend sanding them down to create resistance, then glue on some made to measure padding made from foam and material to match your own soft furnishings.

Posh Pennies takes us through how to paint laminate, solid wood and metal furniture to give you a long-lasting and distinctive finish.  She advises to paint everything disassembled, and ensuring you use quality masking tape for that professional finish.

Sanding is not necessary for laminate pieces or metal, but it is for solid wood. Instead make sure you use a shellac base primer.

For the choice of applicator, we recommend precision brushes so you can get in all the small parts are recommended along with a short pile roller sleeve and tray if you’ve got a lot of surface area to cover.

Wire brushes also come in handy, along with sponges, cloths and Sugar Soaps.
